Your Way Tours · Piazza del Popolo

Rome after dark, from the Pincio

An evening walk from Piazza del Popolo up to the Pincio terrace at sunset, then down to the Spanish Steps, Trevi, the Pantheon, Navona and Campo de' Fiori, all lit up. The listing gives the Steps 20 minutes after dark, but one guest wrote that the group went by them rather than to them.

Rome Night Tour: Pincio, Spanish Steps & Trevi

About this experience

Your Way Tours meets in front of Santa Maria del Popolo at the north end of Piazza del Popolo; the listing asks you to be there by 18:45, and the tour ran at 19:00 on the date we checked. The first climb is the hard one: up to the Pincio terrace for the view back over the square and the domes as the light goes. Then the route crosses to the Spanish Steps and continues to Trevi, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori, about 20 minutes at each.

Read the Spanish Steps part carefully. The itinerary lists a 20-minute stop, and most reviewers mention the Steps lit up at night. But one 5-star guest wrote that "you go by the Spanish steps but not to the steps", and a 1-star review complained the group walked past with no time to go up them. If standing on the Steps matters to you, tell the guide at the start. The Pantheon is closed by then, so it's the floodlit portico from the piazza.

At 4.3 it's the lowest-rated tour on this site, and the reviews explain why: most praise named guides, a few describe late starts or a guide who was hard to hear. Headsets are used "when needed", groups are capped at 18, and children 5 and under go free. For $40 it's the cheapest evening walk that lists the Steps; Maximus Tours' evening walk costs the same and starts at them.

  • The Pincio terrace at sunset, the best free view in this part of Rome
  • The Spanish Steps, Trevi and Navona lit up
  • Ends in Campo de' Fiori, among restaurants for dinner
  • Up to 18 guests; English, German, Spanish and French groups
  • Children 5 and under go free

What guests say

★★★★★

Rome is even more exciting and romantic at sunset and by evening! Carolina was a wonderful tour guide, providing interesting insights on ancient Roman history and on all of the features we visited. The panoramic views, the Spanish steps and my favorite, the Tivoli fountain made this a most memorable and informative trip!

Andrada was our guide and she was amazing, taking us to see many of the key bits of Rome, including the main gate, the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Panetheon (at night so couldn't go inside) [...]

This was an excellent tour w/ great views. Our tour guide was so friendly, provided great background information/fun facts a long the way. The pace was perfect, and allowed a break at the TREVI FOUNTAIN.

Tips before you book

  • Wear proper shoes. The walk up to the Pincio is steep, and one guest with mobility issues found it hard.
  • Bring a layer. Evenings get cool from October, and a reviewer advised a jacket even in spring.
  • Ask the guide at the start whether you'll stop on the Steps or pass along the top.
  • Come back to the Steps at sunrise for the empty version: our best time to visit guide has the hours.
  • Book a table near Campo de' Fiori for 22:00. That's where you finish.
