Immacolata and Christmas at the Spanish Steps

On 8 December Rome crowns the Virgin on her column next to the Spanish Steps, and the Christmas season in the square begins. Here is the day hour by hour, and what to expect until Epiphany.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday 8 December 2026, a public holiday in Italy. Its centre is not the Spanish Steps themselves but the Colonna dell'Immacolata in Piazza Mignanelli, the small square that opens off the southern end of Piazza di Spagna. Firefighters climb the column at dawn, Romans bring flowers all day, and in the afternoon the Pope arrives.

As of 20 October 2026 the Vatican has not published the time of the 2026 papal visit. Below is what happened in 2025, where the 2026 time will appear, and how the square looks through Christmas and New Year: the nativity scene, the tree on the Steps and the lights on Via dei Condotti.

The quick answer

On Tuesday 8 December 2026 firefighters lay a wreath on the Virgin's statue at about 7:00, and the Pope usually comes in the afternoon: in 2025 Pope Leo XIV arrived at 16:00. The 2026 time is announced by the Holy See Press Office a few days before. Expect police barriers and very dense crowds from early afternoon. The Christmas tree, the nativity scene and the Via dei Condotti lights stay up until about 6 January.

What time is the Pope's Immacolata homage in Piazza di Spagna in 2026?

Not announced yet. In 2025 Pope Leo XIV left the Vatican at 15:30 and arrived in Piazza Mignanelli at 16:00; the 2026 time will appear on press.vatican.va in early December.

The visit is a fixed tradition, started by Pius XII and kept by every pope since John XXIII came in person in 1958. In 2025 the Holy See Press Office bulletin records that Leo XIV "left the Vatican and went to Piazza di Spagna" at 15:30, and Turismo Roma gave his arrival as 4 p.m. He was met by the Cardinal Vicar and the Mayor, prayed at the foot of the column and left a basket of flowers. Italian press reported he came in on the popemobile along Via dei Condotti, the route Benedict XVI used to take.

For 2026, watch two pages. The Vatican's programme note for the 2025 visit was published on 3 December, five days ahead, and Turismo Roma posts its own event page with the full timetable of the day. The date itself never moves: 8 December falls on a Tuesday this year, and the Pope also leads the Angelus from St Peter's at noon.

Where is the Colonna dell'Immacolata, and why do firefighters climb it?

In Piazza Mignanelli, a few steps south of the Barcaccia fountain. Firefighters raised it in 1857, and since 1949 their most senior officer on duty climbs up each 8 December to place flowers on the statue.

Stand at the foot of the Spanish Steps and look left, past the Spanish embassy: the tall column with a bronze Virgin on top is the one. It went up on 8 December 1857, three years after Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and Turismo Roma says 220 Roman firefighters did the lifting. Their successors remember it every year. At about 7:00 the most senior firefighter on duty climbs "the more than 100 steps of the ladder" to 27 metres and sets a wreath in the Virgin's arm.

The 7:00 climb is the calm part of the day. The crowd is mostly Romans, the morning is still dark-blue, and you can stand close. By early afternoon the square fills, and the police barriers go up around Piazza Mignanelli and the bottom of Via dei Condotti.

What closes on 8 December, and how crowded does Piazza di Spagna get?

The square and the Steps stay open, but expect barriers around the column, a closed Via Due Macelli and the Spagna metro exit shut for part of the afternoon. Crowds of tens of thousands are normal.

Italian media counted about thirty thousand people for Leo XIV's first visit in 2025. In past years Wanted in Rome reported the Spagna metro station closing from midday and Via Due Macelli, the street from Largo del Tritone into the square, closed to traffic with buses diverted. Roma Mobilità publishes the exact closures a day or two ahead.

Our advice: come for the 7:00 wreath, or come after the Pope has left, from about 17:30, when the barriers come down and the square turns into a Christmas evening. Between 14:00 and 17:00 you will see the back of a lot of heads. If you arrive by metro, get off at Barberini or Flaminio and walk; our guide to getting to the Spanish Steps has both routes.

It is still a public holiday, so the usual rules hold: no sitting on the Steps (€250 fine), and the Steps themselves are free and open around the clock.

After the crowds thin: the Pincio view, the Steps and Trevi lit up, from Piazza del Popolo at 19:00.

Is there a nativity scene on the Spanish Steps at Christmas?

Yes. A Roman-style nativity, the presepe artistico Pinelliano, has been set up on the Steps every Christmas since the 1960s, and in 2025 a 12-metre tree stood on the Steps as well.

The nativity takes its look from Bartolomeo Pinelli, the 19th-century engraver of Roman street life: papier-mâché figures in everyday Roman scenes rather than Bethlehem shepherds. SiViaggia calls it the traditional artistic nativity "allestito dagli anni '60 ogni anno sulla scalinata di Piazza di Spagna".

Above it, the city's tree went back to a classic look in 2025. Sky TG24 reported a 12-metre tree with 300,000 warm LEDs, switched on in the late afternoon of 2 December 2025. The 2026 tree and its lighting date are usually published in late November. Both the tree and the nativity stand on the Steps, which is one more reason the police keep people moving rather than sitting.

When do the Christmas lights on Via dei Condotti go on?

In the 2025-26 season Rome's Christmas lights ran from 26 November 2025 to 6 January 2026. On Via dei Condotti they are hanging spheres, 11 hand-painted in resin and 17 in woven aluminium.

Via dei Condotti runs straight from the Barcaccia toward the Tiber, so its lights frame the Steps from the far end of the street. Turismo Roma credits the 2025 design to Hausmann & Co.: "11 in resina, scolpite e dipinte a mano, e 17 in alluminio intrecciato", with built-in micro-LEDs. Expect the 2026 version on a similar calendar, from late November to Epiphany; the official page for 2026-27 normally goes up in November.

The best view is from the corner of Via dei Condotti and Via Bocca di Leone, looking east: lights overhead, the tree at the end, Trinità dei Monti on top. Come after 17:00, when it is already dark (sunset is about 16:40 in early December).
